Why large fireplaces need "fixed end panels"
Glass doors have a practical limit on how wide each operable panel can swing before the frame and hinges carry too much weight. The solution for openings over ~48″ wide (or ~34″ tall) is a door with fixed end panels: stationary glass sections on the left and right, with fully operable doors in the center. You keep the clean full-glass look and everyday access to the firebox — the frame keeps its rigidity at any width.
What sizes can we build?
We routinely build doors for openings 48–72″ wide, and taller-than-standard openings as well. Most of the door lines in our custom fireplace doors collection can be configured with fixed end panels for oversized openings — and because every EF door is made to order in the USA, "custom" here means your exact dimensions, not the nearest stock size.
Measuring a large opening
Big openings are less forgiving of measurement shortcuts. Measure the width in three places (top, middle, bottom) and the height in three places (left, center, right), to the nearest 1/8″ — masonry openings are rarely perfectly square.
