What is a masonry fireplace?
A masonry fireplace is constructed on site from brick, concrete block, or natural stone, with a firebrick-lined firebox and a clay flue tile chimney. You will see real mortar joints when you look inside, and the structure usually runs from a foundation in the basement up through the roofline. Masonry fireboxes are heavy, non-standard in size, and often out of square by 1/4 to 1/2 inch from top to bottom. That is why stock-size doors rarely fit — and why custom-built is the default recommendation for anything over 36 inches wide.
Overlap fit vs. inside fit
Masonry doors mount one of two ways, and choosing correctly is the single most important decision in the order.
- Overlap fit (most common). The door's frame sits flat against the face of the brick and overlaps the opening by 1.5 inches on the top and sides, 1 inch on the bottom. This hides any out-of-square masonry behind the frame. We size overlap doors to the largest width and tallest height we can measure.
- Inside fit (recessed). The door sits inside the opening flush with the face. Only use this if your opening is square to within 1/8 inch and you want a minimalist look. Inside fit is sized to the smallest width and shortest height.
If you are unsure, send us a photo on the contact page and we will tell you which fit the opening can handle.
Measuring a masonry opening
You will need a tape measure, paper, and a phone for photos. Measure the width at the top and bottom of the opening and the height on both the left and right jambs. Note all four numbers — they will not be identical. Also measure the flat brick or stone surface around the opening to confirm the overlap door's frame has somewhere to sit. The full walkthrough with diagrams lives on the measuring guide.
Every set of measurements submitted through our configurator is reviewed by a human before production. If something looks off — for example, an overlap door specified for an opening without enough flat brick — we email you within one business day.
What makes ExceptionalFire different for masonry
Masonry is where custom fireplace doors earned their reputation, and it is what we build most of. Our masonry line runs on 7-gauge cold-rolled steel frames from Stoll Industries in Pennsylvania, finished in powder coat applied at 400°F. For traditional and rustic homes, we also carry Stoll Bar Iron — forged wrought iron with visible hammer marks, formerly sold as ForgeLine. Design Specialties supplies our widest finish range, with over 21 options including Textured Black, Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Antique Brass, and polished plated finishes.
We are family-owned, ship nationwide, and every frame carries a 5-year warranty against manufacturing defects — see warranty terms. Prices for custom masonry doors typically run $1,200 to $2,800, with premium Avalon and iron ForgeLine builds reaching $4,545.
Popular masonry brands we carry
- Stoll Columbia. Cabinet-style masonry door in standard sizes, under $1,500 for most openings. Fastest ship time in the Stoll line.
- Stoll Manhattan. Contemporary flat-panel frame for modern homes.
- Stoll Avalon. Fully custom premium masonry with the widest finish list — formerly sold as Heritage.
- Stoll Bar Iron (ForgeLine). Hand-forged wrought iron, hammered texture, ideal for traditional and rustic interiors.
- DS Rainbow & Cabot. Transitional cabinet doors with custom sizing and bi-fold or single-swing options.
- Hearthcraft stock doors. Pre-sized masonry doors starting at $865 — if your opening matches a common size, this is the fastest path.
Installation considerations for brick and stone
Overlap doors anchor into the brick or stone face with masonry screws or lead anchors — both are included in the hardware pack. A hammer drill with a 1/4-inch masonry bit makes quick work of it. Stone veneer installs need a bit more care because the flat surface may not be where it looks; we recommend locating the drill points over mortar joints whenever possible. Inside-fit doors anchor to the firebrick jamb and usually need a second person to hold the frame while the first person drills.
If your fireplace has a surround of tile, marble, or stacked stone that reduces the flat area around the opening, order the overlap door narrower than the surround allows — we can trim the overlap on either side down to 1 inch without losing structural integrity.
