Child-Safe Guide

Child-Safe Fireplace Screens — Tested for Toddlers & Pets

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a screen "child-safe"?

Three features: (1) a gated frame that latches closed (toddlers can't pull it open), (2) heat-resistant outer surfaces under 120°F to prevent burns on touch, and (3) a base footprint that resists tipping under up to 50 lbs of pull. Our child-safe line is tested to ASTM F963.

At what age can I remove the child-safe screen?

Most parenting guides recommend keeping a barrier in front of an active fireplace until the child is 5+ years old. The latch is designed to be operable by adults but resistant to small fingers. Remove only when supervision is constant and the child understands fire safety.

Does the screen latch lock?

The standard latch is a magnetic catch that resists pulling but doesn't require a key. Some premium models offer a slide-lock for added security. The latch operates one-handed by an adult.

How tall are child-safe screens?

32-36 inches typically — tall enough that a toddler can't reach over. Some models extend to 40 inches for taller children or larger fireplaces. The product page lists exact dimensions per model.

Are child-safe screens fireproof?

The outer frame and panels are powder-coated steel with heat-shielding insulation between the outer face and the inner mesh. Direct flame contact would damage them, so install with at least 12 inches of clearance from the opening. The mesh stops sparks but isn't flame-rated.

Do child-safe screens come in different finishes?

Black, antique brass, oil-rubbed bronze, and pewter — the four highest-volume finishes. Custom finishes available on request with 14-21 day lead time. We don't offer plated finishes on child-safe lines because the lacquer isn't pet-safe at high heat.
