Overlap Fit Fireplace Doors
Mounts over the firebox face
Overlap Fit fireplace doors sit on the FACE of your fireplace opening, with the frame covering the brick or stone edges. This is the most popular fit type — about 70% of all fireplace door installations — because it's the most forgiving. Rough masonry, slightly uneven openings, broken brick edges, mortar variance: the overlap frame covers it all. Why Overlap Fit is the most popular It hides imperfections. Real masonry openings are rarely perfectly square — bricks shift, mortar joints vary, edges get chipped. Overlap covers the rough edge and presents a clean rectangular frame. Tolerance is forgiving. Overlap accepts ±1/8" on every dimension. Combined with our shop's 1/16" auto-trim per side, small measurement variances simply don't matter. Installation is simpler. No need to test-fit inside the opening — the frame mounts on the front face with anchors. Most homeowners can do it themselves. It works on every fireplace type. Masonry, prefab, hand-laid stone, brick veneer — overlap mounts the same way on all of them. Use the smallest number. Measure the OPENING height at three points (left, center, right). Use the smallest number. Measure the FLAT SURFACE available around the opening on every side. The frame needs to seat against a flat area at least 1/2" wide on top, bottom, and both sides — wider for larger frame profiles. If you have a lintel bar: measure height to the bottom of the lintel only if the bar is FLUSH with the front face (within 1"). If it's recessed deeper than 1" inside, ignore it and measure to the top of the brick/stone. Round to the nearest 1/8" — our shop auto-trims 1/16" per side, so ±1/8" is forgiving. Frame profiles available in Overlap Fit Every Overlap Fit door at ExceptionalFire is built in the USA. Frame overlap depth varies by product — choose based on how much of the surrounding face you want covered: Brookfield (1-9/16" overlap, ±1/4" tolerance) — the most flexible mount; popular for prefab + magnetic-mount installs. Cabot (5/8" overlap, ±1/16") — slim profile; clean traditional look. Carolina (2" overlap, ±1/4") — wide overlap; covers significant edge variance for rougher masonry. Stiletto Cutback (3/4" overlap, ±1/16") — modern cutback design; overlap-only configuration. Avalon, Heritage, Belmont, Laguna, Monterey — premium-finish options with overlap configurations. Frame finishes: matte black powder coat (free), Artisan Premier (+$75–$150), Handcrafted (+$400+). Glass options: clear, grey, or bronze tint. Installation tips for Overlap Fit doors Check the surrounding face is reasonably flat — within 1/8" across the frame footprint. Heavily uneven stone (stacked stone, rough flagstone) may not let the frame seat flush. In that case, install the frame first and bring veneer up to its edge for a clean finish. Existing factory doors come out first — measure the clean opening, not the opening with old hardware in place. Allow 14–21 business days for custom build. Premium finishes run 4–5 weeks. Quick-ship variants (HearthCraft Grande/Medio, Stoll Columbia standard sizes) ship in 2–6 days if the size matches. Frequently asked questions Can I switch between Overlap and Inside Fit on the same door? Some products support both (Carolina, Cavestone, Stiletto regular). Others are designed for one fit only (Stiletto Cutback is overlap-only; Rainbow is inside-fit-only). Each product page shows which fits are supported. What's the minimum flat surface I need around the opening? At least 1/2" of flat face on every side for the smallest frame profiles (Cabot, Stiletto Cutback). Larger profiles (Carolina 2", Brookfield 1-9/16") need 1-2" of flat surround. Measure before ordering. Will Overlap Fit doors work on a stone veneer fireplace? Yes — as long as the veneer is reasonably flat where the frame seats. Stacked stone or heavily textured veneer may need the frame installed first, with veneer brought up to the frame edge afterward. Send us a photo through the AI Fireplace Expert if you're unsure. Is Overlap Fit airtight? Yes. The overlap frame seals against the front face of the fireplace, creating a tight gasket seal. When the fire is cold, closed glass doors stop room air from being pulled up the chimney by natural draft, saving 8–10% on heating bills in cold climates. How long does an Overlap Fit door take to install? Most homeowners install in 30–60 minutes with a drill and basic tools. The frame mounts to the brick/stone or to studs behind the surround using included anchors. Detailed install instructions ship with every door. Get a fit recommendation in 15 seconds →

Overlap-Fit Fireplace Doors — Hides Out-of-Square Openings
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is overlap-fit the most common choice?
Because 90% of masonry fireplaces are out of square by 1/4-1/2 inch from age, settling, or original masonry tolerance. The overlap frame covers the imperfect edges and seals against the flat brick face — much more forgiving than trying to fit a door inside an irregular opening.
How much does overlap-fit overlap the opening?
1.5 inches on the top and sides, 1 inch on the bottom. The wider top/side overlap covers any masonry irregularity; the narrower bottom keeps the door from interfering with the hearth. Custom overlaps can be specified down to 1 inch all around for tight surrounds.
How do I measure for an overlap-fit door?
Measure the opening at four points and order to the LARGEST width and TALLEST height. The frame needs to cover everything. Also measure the flat brick area surrounding the opening to confirm there's room for the overlap to sit. The measuring guide has diagrams.
Can overlap-fit work on stone veneer?
Yes — provided the flat veneer area extends at least 2 inches beyond the opening on all four sides. Anchor into mortar joints when possible; stone faces split easier than brick under masonry-screw load. Stacked stone with irregular faces may need a custom overlap dimension.
What if my opening is wider on one side?
The overlap is forgiving — order the frame sized to the wider dimension; the gasket will compress against the brick wherever the surface is closest. Up to 1/2 inch difference between sides is normal and won't affect seal performance.
Is overlap-fit easier to install?
Yes — typically 30-45 minutes vs. 60-90 for inside-fit. Mark the four corner anchor points on the brick face, drill with a 1/4-inch masonry bit, insert lead anchors, and screw the frame in place. The hardware pack ships with everything needed.
