Choose the right fireplace screen.
Start with the fireplace you have and the job you need the screen to do. A freestanding screen, a mesh curtain and an appliance safety barrier are different products.

Doors with mesh
A mesh curtain or mesh doors can sit behind the glass door panels. Check what is included with the door style you choose and how the manufacturer says to operate it.

An approved safety barrier
Sealed-glass gas fireplaces may require a manufacturer-specified barrier. Use the fireplace’s exact model to identify the right part; a decorative screen is not automatically a substitute.

- Opening width and height. Measure in more than one place if the opening is uneven. Check coverage against the screen’s actual dimensions.
- Usable hearth depth. Include the space needed for feet, handles and any opening panels. A screen needs a stable place to stand.
- What is already installed. Note raised hearth edges, glass doors, vents and controls. Include a full front photo when asking for help.
- Fireplace make and model. For a factory-built fireplace, check the manual before adding a screen or changing an existing barrier.
A few things to know before lighting a fire.
Follow the door instructions.
Many wood-burning fireplace door sets are used with the glass doors open and the mesh closed while a fire is burning. Your fireplace and door manuals determine the correct arrangement. Sealed-glass gas fireplaces have different requirements.
Screens can get hot.
Mesh, frames and glass can become hot enough to burn. Keep children, pets and anything that can burn away from the fireplace. A decorative screen is not a childproof guard.
