Wrought Iron Fireplace Screens — Hand-Forged Heritage

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these screens really hand-forged?

Yes — Stoll Bar Iron (formerly ForgeLine) is hammered from billet stock by smiths in Pennsylvania. Twisted bars, scrollwork, and hammer-marked surfaces are signatures of true forging. Cast iron screens (cheaper imitations) lack the surface texture and grain alignment of forged iron.

How much do wrought iron screens cost?

$900-$2,800 typically. Custom sizes and decorative scrollwork push higher. Pricing reflects hand-forging time — a single decorative scroll takes 30-90 minutes to hammer; a full scroll-work screen takes 8-16 hours to forge.

Do wrought iron screens go with modern interiors?

The traditional scroll-work styles read as transitional or rustic — not strictly modern. Stoll's contemporary iron line offers cleaner straight-bar profiles that work in modern and industrial-style interiors without the heritage scrollwork.

Will wrought iron rust indoors?

Properly sealed iron (oil-rubbed, hammered black, antique copper) doesn't rust under normal indoor conditions. The finish coat seals the metal. Outdoor exposure (covered patios, screened lanais) is fine; full weather exposure will require annual maintenance with paste wax.

How heavy is a wrought iron screen?

50-100 lbs typically — significantly heavier than steel or brass equivalents. Plan two-person handling for delivery and install. The base feet are weighted and angled for tipping resistance; floor anchoring is optional for most installs.

Are wrought iron screens fireproof?

The iron itself is essentially fireproof — it's the same material the firebox interior is made from in old masonry homes. The finish coat softens slightly above 600°F but reseals on cooling. Position the screen 12+ inches from the opening for finish longevity.
