Tri-Fold Fireplace Screens — Adjustable, Self-Standing

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a tri-fold over single-panel?

Three reasons: (1) the side panels angle inward to grip the floor — better tipping resistance without weighted feet, (2) the screen folds for easy storage in summer, (3) tri-fold adjusts to slightly varied opening widths by changing the side-panel angle.

Are the hinges flexible?

Yes — typical tri-fold hinges allow the side panels to swing 0-90 degrees from the center panel. This lets you angle the screen toward or away from the room as needed. Heavy-duty wrought-iron versions use forged butt hinges with limited articulation.

What's the typical width?

Center panel 24-36 inches; each side panel 18-24 inches. Total deployed width 60-84 inches when angled at typical room positioning. Folded width 24-36 inches for storage. Specs vary by manufacturer.

Do tri-fold screens come in arch styles?

Most arch screens are single-panel — the curve doesn't fold flat well across hinges. A few designs use 3 hinged segments approximating the arch in 3 facets, but the visual effect isn't as clean as a single-piece curved panel.

Can children pinch their fingers in the hinges?

Possible but unlikely — the hinges are stiff enough that small fingers don't catch easily. For homes with very young children, the child-safe gated screen line is a safer choice. Tri-fold is fine for school-age children with adult supervision.

How heavy is a tri-fold screen?

30-50 lbs depending on size and material. Wrought-iron tri-folds run heavier (50-80 lbs). One-person handling works for the lighter steel and brass versions; iron may benefit from two-person setup.
