Do I need a chimney for a gas fireplace?
It depends on the fireplace. Direct-vent models use an approved vent route to the outdoors, while inserts use the venting system specified for the existing fireplace. Vent-free and electric options have different requirements. Your installer can help you choose a suitable model for your space.
What’s the difference between direct vent and vent-free?
A direct-vent fireplace has a sealed combustion system connected to the outdoors. A vent-free fireplace uses room air and has specific ventilation and room requirements; it is not permitted in every location. Compare the installation manuals and check with your local building department before choosing.
What size fireplace do I need?
For the look, compare the fireplace’s viewing area with the scale of your wall and furniture. For heat, ask your installer to assess the room, climate and insulation alongside the model’s output. The framing opening and finished fireplace dimensions are different, so use the installation drawing when planning the wall.
