Wrought Iron Fireplace Doors — Hand-Forged, Made in USA
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes wrought iron different from steel?
Wrought iron is hand-forged from billet stock, hammered into shape while red-hot. The visible hammer marks, twists, and slight surface irregularities are signatures of real forging — not a casting or stamped imitation. Steel doors are flat-rolled and welded; iron doors are sculpted.
Who makes ExceptionalFire's wrought iron doors?
Our wrought iron line is Stoll Bar Iron — formerly sold as ForgeLine. Stoll Industries forges them in Pennsylvania to spec. Design Specialties also offers a wrought-iron-look on cast frames. The product page lists the source for each model.
Do iron fireplace doors come in standard sizes?
No — every iron door is custom-built to your opening. The forging process makes stock sizing impractical. Allow 4-5 weeks production time. The configurator prices each option as you build.
Can I get an iron door in a specific finish?
Yes — Bar Iron ships in oil-rubbed bronze, hammered black, antique copper, gunmetal, and several heritage patinas. Plated finishes (polished brass, antique nickel) are also available at premium tiers. Order finish samples through the configurator if you're unsure — $10 each, refundable as a credit on your door order.
Are iron doors heavier than steel?
Yes — wrought iron has a higher density than rolled steel, and hand-forging adds material thickness at hinge and handle points. A 36×26 iron door runs 60-80 lbs. Plan accordingly when measuring anchor points; masonry screws into mortar joints handle the weight without issue.
How do I clean a wrought iron door?
Wipe down with a soft dry cloth or a slightly damp microfiber. Avoid abrasive pads, ammonia-based cleaners, and water on bare iron sections — they accelerate oxidation. For oil-rubbed bronze, a thin coat of carnauba paste wax once a year preserves the patina.
