Two numbers decide it: how many BTUs per hour your set burns (printed on the burner tag, the rating plate or the spec sheet) and what your utility charges per unit. Everything else is arithmetic — and we show that arithmetic below the tool, so you can check us.

We deliberately don't pre-fill a gas price. Rates swing by state, by utility and by month, and a made-up national average would give you a made-up answer. Leave the rate blank and you still get your fuel consumption; type the rate from your bill and you get dollars. Natural gas bills often list CCF rather than therms — your bill carries the conversion (it is close to, but not exactly, 1 therm per CCF).

This table has no prices in it on purpose — these are pure conversions, true in every state and every year. Find the row nearest your set's rating, then multiply by whatever your utility charges.

Rounded to two decimals. A set on a manual safety pilot also burns a small standing pilot flame between fires — trivial per hour, but it runs 24/7 unless you shut it off out of season.

Three constants do all the work, and none of them are our opinion:

A therm is 100,000 BTU
That is the definition of the unit your natural gas utility bills you in. A 60,000 BTU/hr set therefore burns 0.6 therm every hour it runs.

A gallon of propane is about 91,500 BTU
The standard figure for liquid propane. So the same 60,000 BTU/hr set burns roughly 0.66 gallon per hour on LP.

A pound of propane is about 21,600 BTU
Useful if you buy propane by the tank rather than by the gallon — a 20 lb grill cylinder holds roughly 4.7 gallons.

Then it is one multiplication
(BTU per hour ÷ BTU per unit) × your price per unit = cost per hour. That is the whole formula; the calculator above just does it faster.

Where to find your rate: it is on the supply line of your gas bill, usually as $/therm or $/CCF for natural gas and $/gallon on a propane delivery ticket. Use your own number. Anyone quoting you a single national price is quoting you a number that is wrong in most of the country.

Same logs, very different bill

The set does not care which fuel it burns — but your wallet will, because the two are priced in different units on different markets. Propane is typically the more expensive way to run the same flame, and it is also the fuel most likely to move sharply from one delivery to the next. If you have both options at the house, run the calculator twice with each rate before you choose an orifice.

Two practical notes that catch people out. First, the fuel is not interchangeable after the fact — the burner is drilled and configured for one or the other, so pick correctly at order time. Every set we sell is ordered as natural gas or propane, and our team confirms it with you before it ships. Second, propane at altitude can require derating; if you are well above sea level, tell us before you order.

Not sure which fuel is at your fireplace? Look at the shutoff valve and the meter: a gas meter on the outside wall means natural gas; a tank in the yard or a cylinder means propane. If you are still unsure, call us — a 30-second description settles it, and getting it wrong is an expensive mistake to unwind.

Vented vs Vent-Free

Vent type doesn't change what you burn — it changes what you keep

This is the part most articles get backwards. Per BTU, both types cost exactly the same to run. A 60,000 BTU/hr vented set and a 60,000 BTU/hr vent-free set burn identical fuel per hour. What differs is where that heat ends up, and that is a comfort question rather than a fuel-cost question:

  • Vented runs with the damper open, so most of the heat goes up the chimney along with some already-heated room air. You are paying for the fire, not for the warmth. Vented sets are also commonly rated at higher BTU inputs, so the hourly fuel figure tends to be higher on both counts.
  • Vent-free runs with the damper closed and keeps essentially all of its heat in the room, which makes it the cheaper source of actual warmth per dollar — where local code allows it. It also has a hard BTU ceiling tied to room volume, so it cannot be sized as large.

If your goal is a fire to look at, buy vented and stop thinking about heat. If your goal is a room that gets warmer, read vented vs vent-free gas logs first — including where vent-free is prohibited (Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York City), where its sale is barred (California, with a written exception for decorative sets in a vented fireplace) and where it is allowed with conditions (Massachusetts: fire-department permit, CO detector, 40,000 BTU/hr limit).

Firewood prices are local and seasonal, so we will not pretend to know yours — get a cord price from a supplier near you and compare it against your calculator result. What we can tell you is what the two costs are actually made of, because the fuel line is only part of the picture:

The honest summary: wood is often cheaper per BTU and almost always more expensive per evening once your own time counts for anything. Gas logs win on use — a fireplace you light 60 nights a year beats a cheaper one you light six times.

How to cut what your fireplace costs you

Size the set to the firebox, not to the biggest number
A larger set burns proportionally more fuel every hour, forever. Buying two inches bigger than your firebox wants is a permanent surcharge on every fire. The sizing tool takes about three minutes.

Shut the standing pilot off out of season
A manual safety pilot burns quietly all summer for no benefit. Electronic ignition avoids the standing pilot entirely — worth pricing when you configure the set.

Buy a variable-flame remote if you burn long evenings
Turning the flame down turns the fuel down. On a set you run three or four hours a night, being able to dial it back matters more than it does on an occasional fire.

Close the damper the moment the fire is out
An open damper on a cold night is an open window. With vented logs the damper has to stay open while burning — but leaving it open after is pure loss.

Put a tight glass door on the opening for the hours you aren't using it

Frequently asked questions

Are gas logs expensive to run?
It depends almost entirely on two things you control: the burner's BTU rating and how many hours you burn. A 60,000 BTU/hr set uses 0.6 therm of natural gas or about 0.66 gallon of propane per hour — multiply by your own rate to get the cost. For a typical few-hours-an-evening fire, most households find it lands in the same range as running a space heater rather than anything dramatic. Run the numbers with your rate rather than trusting anyone's national average.
How much gas does a gas log set use per hour?
Divide the burner rating by the energy in one unit of fuel. Natural gas: BTU/hr ÷ 100,000 = therms per hour. Propane: BTU/hr ÷ 91,500 = gallons per hour. So a 45,000 BTU/hr set burns 0.45 therm or about 0.49 gallon each hour it runs.
Is propane or natural gas cheaper for gas logs?
Natural gas is usually the cheaper of the two per BTU delivered, but the gap depends entirely on your local utility rate and your propane delivery price — and propane moves more. Put both rates into the calculator above; that comparison is the only one that describes your house. Note that a set is built for one fuel or the other and cannot be swapped afterwards, so decide before you order.
Do vented gas logs cost more to run than vent-free?
Per BTU, no — identical fuel, identical cost. In practice vented sets are often rated at higher inputs and they run with the damper open, so more of what you pay for goes up the chimney. Does a standing pilot light cost much?
Per hour it is small, but it runs continuously, so over a full off-season it adds up to a real line on the bill for no benefit. If your set has a manual safety pilot, shut it off in spring. If you are still choosing, electronic ignition removes the standing pilot altogether.
Where do I find my set's BTU rating?
On the burner's rating tag, on the appliance label inside the firebox, or in the manufacturer's spec sheet for that burner and size. Ratings differ by burner even within one log style, so read the burner rather than the log set name. If you cannot find it, send us a photo of the tag and we will read it for you.
