Inside Fit Fireplace Doors
Mounts inside the firebox
Inside Fit fireplace doors sit flush inside the firebox opening — no overlap onto the brick or stone face. The result is a clean, built-in look that disappears when the fire is off and frames the flame perfectly when it's lit. It's the choice for clean, modern, or transitional homes where the fireplace should feel architectural, not bolted-on. When Inside Fit is the right choice Inside Fit works best when three conditions line up: Your opening is reasonably square. The door is built to slide INTO the opening, so any taper of more than 1/4" between top and bottom (or left and right) creates a visible gap. Prefab fireboxes are perfect — the metal is always square. Cleanly-built modern masonry usually works too. You want a modern, recessed look. Overlap Fit covers the brick edge with a frame; Inside Fit shows the brick edge and tucks the door inside it. Inside Fit reads cleaner and more contemporary. You can measure to ±1/16 inch. Precision matters because nothing hides gaps. Our shop auto-trims 1/16" per side as a safety margin, but the original measurement still drives everything. Inside Fit vs Overlap Fit — which to choose Inside Fit Overlap Fit Look Recessed, built-in, modern Frame-on-face, traditional Best for Prefab + clean masonry Rough masonry + uneven openings Tolerance ±1/16" ±1/8" Hides imperfections? No — opening must be clean Yes — frame covers the edge Most popular ~30% of installs ~70% of installs Not sure which fits your fireplace? How to measure for Inside Fit Width: measure brick-to-brick (or metal-to-metal for prefab) at the front face — top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest number. Height: measure the front opening — left, center, and right. Use the smallest number. For masonry with a flush lintel bar: measure height to the BOTTOM of the lintel — the door frame seats against it. For masonry with a recessed lintel (more than 1" deep): ignore the lintel, measure to the top of the brick/stone opening. Round to the nearest 1/8" — our shop trims 1/16" per side automatically, so small variances are forgiven, but precision is still your friend. Materials, finishes, and brands we offer in Inside Fit Every door in this collection is built in the USA. The most popular Inside Fit options at ExceptionalFire: Cavestone — handcrafted matte-black steel with cabinet-style swing doors. The Cavestone bestseller. Rainbow — clean prefab-fit door with a 5/8" lip designed for inside mounting in factory-built fireboxes. Stiletto — slim modern profile, designed for inside fit by default. Cutback variant covers wider openings. Carolina Inside — traditional aesthetic with inside-fit option for cleaner masonry. Frame finishes range from matte black powder coat (free) through Artisan Premier (Antique Brass, Brushed Nickel, Oil Rubbed Bronze, +$75-$150) to Handcrafted (Forged Iron, Burnished Bronze, +$400+). Glass options: clear, grey, or bronze tint. Every door is custom-sized to your opening — there are no "standard" sizes for true Inside Fit. Installation tips for Inside Fit doors Inside Fit installations are straightforward when the opening is square. A few pro-installer notes: Test fit before final mount — dry-fit the frame before drilling so you can spot a 1/8" issue before it's permanent. If small gaps appear after install, you can fill them with mortar tinted to match your fireplace face for a seamless finish. This is standard practice on natural stone and uneven brick. Old factory doors must come out first — measure the clean opening AFTER you remove existing hardware, not with old doors in place. Allow 14–21 business days for custom build. Premium finishes (plated, handcrafted iron) run 4–5 weeks. Frequently asked questions Can I get Inside Fit on a rough masonry opening? You can — but it's risky. Inside Fit shows the opening edge, so any taper, brick variance, or mortar lump is visible. We recommend Overlap Fit for rough openings, and Inside Fit for cleanly-built masonry or prefab. What's the tolerance on Inside Fit doors? ±1/16 inch on every dimension. Our shop also trims 1/16" per side as a safety margin, so even with that tolerance you have a small cushion. If you want zero trim and an exact-size build, write the precise dimensions in the order Notes field — we'll build to spec. Do Inside Fit doors come in standard sizes? No. Every Inside Fit door at ExceptionalFire is custom-sized to your opening. Standard sizes don't exist for true Inside Fit because every fireplace opening is slightly different. Are Inside Fit doors as airtight as Overlap? Inside Fit creates a tight seal against the firebox itself, while Overlap seals against the front face. Both are equally airtight when correctly installed and measured — Inside Fit just requires more precision to achieve that seal. Can the AI Fireplace Expert tell me if I should pick Inside or Overlap? Yes. Upload a single photo of your fireplace and our AI Expert recommends Inside Fit or Overlap Fit based on opening shape, evenness, and fireplace type. It's free and takes about 15 seconds. Inside-Fit Fireplace Doors — Recessed, Minimalist Look
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between inside-fit and overlap-fit?
Inside-fit means the door sits flush inside the opening — frame edges align with the brick face. Overlap-fit means the frame sits on top of the brick face and overlaps the opening by 1.5" sides/top, 1" bottom. Inside-fit is minimalist; overlap hides out-of-square openings.
When should I choose inside-fit?
Three cases: (1) your opening is square to within 1/8 inch on all four corners, (2) you want a sleek modern look without a visible frame on the brick face, (3) you have decorative tile or stone right up to the opening edge that you don't want to cover.
How do I measure for an inside-fit door?
Measure the opening at four points (top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right) and order to the smallest width and shortest height. The door must fit the tightest dimension, not the widest. The measuring guide walks through it.
Is inside-fit harder to install?
Slightly — the door anchors to the firebrick jamb (the inside surface of the opening), not the brick face. You'll need a hammer drill with a 3/16-inch masonry bit and refractory anchors that bite into firebrick without cracking. Plan 60-90 minutes for the install.
Will sparks escape around an inside-fit door?
No — inside-fit doors include a continuous gasket around the perimeter that seals against the jamb. The seal is just as tight as overlap-fit. The only difference is aesthetic, not functional.
Are inside-fit doors more expensive?
Same price range as overlap-fit equivalents. The construction cost is similar. The 5-10% premium some shops charge for inside-fit reflects the tighter tolerances; we price flat across both fit types.
