See-Through Guide

See-Through Gas Logs — Visible from Both Sides

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a see-through gas log set?

A gas log designed to look real from both sides simultaneously — typically used in two-room fireplaces (e.g., living room/dining room) where the firebox is open on both sides. The log set has 3D bark and grain detail visible from front and back.

Are see-through logs more expensive?

Yes — typically $800-$1,800 vs. $400-$1,200 for one-sided logs. The dual-finished ceramic and the symmetric burner pattern add fabrication cost. Worth it for two-room fireplaces where one-sided logs would look fake from the back.

Do see-through logs work with any fireplace?

Only with a true see-through firebox (open on both sides). Single-sided fireplaces don't benefit. Verify the firebox model — many "see-through" prefab fireplaces have specific gas log sets approved by the manufacturer; deviating voids the prefab warranty.

Are see-through logs always vented?

Mostly yes — see-through fireboxes typically have functional dampers because the geometry doesn't support ventless certification. A few specialty ventless see-through sets exist for newer prefab models with sealed combustion. Check the specific firebox model.

How are see-through logs installed?

Same as one-sided logs — burner bed first, then logs in the manufacturer's pattern. The pattern is symmetric so the visual works from both sides. A licensed gas plumber connects the gas line; log placement is typically DIY-able with careful pattern following.

Can I retrofit see-through logs into an old single-sided firebox?

No — the firebox geometry has to be open on both sides for see-through logs to make sense. A single-sided firebox would only show the logs from one direction; see-through becomes a one-sided system at much higher cost.
