Superior Fireplace Doors — Custom Replacements, Built by Model

Superior fireboxes, now catalogued under Lennox, went into homes across the country as builder-grade wood-burning units. Two things make Superior doors harder than they should be: the model families split between heat-circulating and radiant fireboxes, which mount doors differently, and a great many Superior walls have been refaced since installation.

Find your Superior model

Look for the metal rating plate inside the firebox — commonly on a side wall, or behind the lower grille on louvered circulating models. The plate carries the model number and the UL listing, which is what determines door fit.

Series matter here. The BC and HC families are heat-circulating: a double-wall firebox draws room air through the lower grilles, warms it in the jacket around the fire chamber, and returns it through the upper grilles. Their radiant siblings (BR, RD) warm by glow alone. A door that blocks circulating grilles is the single most common Superior mistake. The WRT and WCT series share door footprints by number — a WRT3036 and a WCT3036 take the same door.

One Superior-specific warning: every layer added to a fireplace wall subtracts from the firebox opening. Tile over the original surround, stacked-stone veneer, a granite slab, thicker mantel legs — each can creep past the steel edge and reshape the reveal. Catalog dimensions describe the fireplace as it left the factory. If your wall has been touched since, those numbers describe a fireplace that no longer exists.

Why a universal door will not fit

A prefabricated firebox is sheet metal, not masonry: a thin steel face, louvers, and engineered air passages the unit needs to cool itself. A universal or masonry-style door is designed to overlap a brick face and clamp to it. On a prefab that overlap sits proud of the face and blocks the louvers and cooling-air paths.

• Prefab fireplaces need an inside-fit door that mounts within the opening itself.
• Nominal size is not door size. A "36-inch" fireplace is a size class, not a measurement. Actual openings vary between installations because surrounding brick, tile or facing work changes the usable opening.
• The tolerance is tight. A door that is half an inch off will not seat in an inside-fit frame — which is why we build to the nearest 1/8 inch instead of stocking standard sizes.

How to measure your opening

You need three numbers, and you should record the smaller figure of each pair — openings settle and facing work is rarely perfectly square.

1. Opening width — measure at the top and at the bottom.
2. Opening height — measure at the left and at the right.
3. Rear width — if the firebox tapers toward the back.
