Superior HC-36 Fireplace Doors — Superior vs Heatilator ID & Fit Guide
Two Fireplaces Named HC36 — Only One of Them Is Yours
The costliest mistake anyone makes with this model number is ordering doors for the wrong manufacturer. Superior sold a fireplace called the HC-36. Heatilator sold one called the HC36. The digits match; the fireboxes, mounting patterns, and doors share nothing. Give the table below sixty seconds and the question is settled.

Get the Proof Off the Rating Plate
Wait for a cold firebox, bring a flashlight, and look for the small metal tag: riveted to a sidewall just inside the opening on most units, or visible once the lower grille panel is tipped out. The brand name printed above the model number is the deciding line — Superior or Lennox points here, Heatilator points to its own page. A plate that has been painted over or lost entirely is no dead end: upload one straight-on photo to the AI Fireplace Expert and the model family comes back identified in roughly 15 seconds.
What's Specific to Superior's HC Series
In Superior's model shorthand the C denotes a heat-circulating firebox, so the HC-36 moves room air around a double-walled firebox rather than relying on pure radiant heat like stablemates such as the RD-36. For door purposes, the useful fact is this: aftermarket fitment charts place the HC-36 on the common Superior 36-inch door platform, alongside the BR and BC builder models — there was never a special "HC-only" door size to hunt down. Those charts list the family's opening near 36 inches wide by a bit over 20 inches tall, but read that as background, not an order spec: refractory panels, refacing, and installation habits move real-world openings around, so yours gets measured, not assumed. Running the larger version? Its guide is here: Superior HC-42.
From Your Numbers to Your Door
Once the brand question is closed, the path is short. Configure the door in the prefab fireplace doors collection: enter your opening dimensions, choose the frame finish, glass, and mesh, and watch the total update as you go — custom doors begin at $595, with the full price visible before checkout. Your measurements then get a human review under the Perfect Fit Guarantee; only after that sign-off is the frame fabricated, in 1/8-inch increments, to your opening. Shipping inside the US is free, and the inside-fit frame installs at the firebox face with ordinary hand tools.
Measure the Opening, Not the Legend
Six figures drive the build: width at three heights across the opening, height at three points along it, with the smallest of each set winning. Keep the tape on the metal edge of the firebox opening — the surrounding tile, marble, or brick is scenery as far as the door is concerned. While you are in there, photograph any leftover track sections, clips, or screen channels from an earlier door kit; they affect how the new frame seats. Every tape position is illustrated in the measuring guide.
Superior HC-36 Doors: Three Specifics
I already bought Heatilator HC36 doors. Will they mount on a Superior HC-36?
No — return them if you can. The two manufacturers used different frame geometry and attachment methods, and retailers on both sides warn against crossing brands. Doors built to your measured Superior opening are the correct replacement, not an adapter or a workaround.
Old door tracks and clips are still in my firebox. Do they have to come out?
Usually, yes — leftover snap-in hardware from a factory kit can keep a new frame from seating flush, and our doors mount independently of it. Include the old hardware in your photos and we will tell you during measurement verification exactly what to remove.
There's a gas log lighter in my HC-36 — does it affect the door?
Some installations added a log lighter or a full gas log set over the years. A log set changes nothing about the frame; a starter key or valve that sits in or near the opening should be noted with a measurement and a photo so the frame and handles clear it. This is routine — flag it and the build accounts for it.
