The Temco GLC42 is a 42-inch wood-burning, zero-clearance fireplace built by Temco Fireplace Products through the 1980s and 1990s. Like the rest of Temco's factory-built line, it went into new construction by the truckload: a steel firebox, refractory-lined, framed straight into the wall with a finished surround over its sheet-metal face. The Three Mistakes That Ruin a 42-Inch Door Order

Trusting the nominal size. The "42 by just-under-22" figure in fitment listings is a starting point, not a spec sheet for your living room. Refractory panels, hearth height, and how the surround was finished all move the real opening. Order off the nominal number and you're betting the fit on someone else's installation.

Forcing a masonry door onto a prefab face. There's no brick around a GLC42 opening to clamp to — only sheet metal and surround finish that won't hold an overlap frame safely, and an overlapping frame can blanket air paths the fireplace was designed to breathe through.

Treating the firebox as a mounting surface. A proper inside-fit door mounts at the front flange only. Drilling into refractory panels or firebox walls to make a wrong-sized door work compromises the unit — and it's never necessary when the door is built to the opening in the first place.

How to Measure a GLC42 Opening

Three numbers decide everything. With the screen pulled aside, measure the opening width at the top, middle, and bottom — record the smallest of the three. Measure the height at the left, center, and right — smallest again. Finally, check just inside the opening for obstructions such as a raised refractory floor panel or an old screen track, and note how far in they sit.
