Contemporary Fireplace Screens — Modern Lines, Minimal Frames
Frequently Asked Questions
What defines a "contemporary" screen?
Clean rectilinear frames (no scrollwork or finials), thin profiles (3/8 inch frame stock or less), and matte finishes (graphite black, brushed nickel, satin bronze). The aesthetic complements modern and transitional homes. Traditional screens use heavier frames with decorative elements.
Do contemporary screens use the same mesh?
Yes — woven steel mesh in a fine weave (1/16 inch openings) for spark containment. Some premium contemporary lines use brass or stainless mesh for a luxury finish. The mesh function is identical; the aesthetic differs.
Are contemporary screens single-panel or folded?
Most are single-panel for the cleanest look. Tri-fold contemporary versions exist for very wide openings (over 48 inches) where a single panel would be impractical to stand without supports.
What sizes are available?
Standard sizes 36×30 through 48×34 ship in 3-5 days. Custom sizes outside that range build in 14-21 business days. The configurator handles both.
Are contemporary screens more expensive?
Slightly — contemporary frames use thinner stock, which requires precision welding to maintain rigidity. Pricing runs $650-$1,400 vs. $500-$1,200 for traditional spark-guard equivalents. The 10-15% premium reflects fabrication quality.
Do contemporary screens go with traditional doors?
Yes — many homes mix a contemporary screen (visible during open-fire burns) with traditional masonry doors (closed for off-season). The screen frame is lower-profile and disappears visually when the doors are closed.
