Glass Fireplace Screens — Tempered Panels with Frame Mesh
Frequently Asked Questions
What's a "glass screen" vs. a glass door?
A glass screen has tempered glass panels in the frame but doesn't seal against air movement when the fireplace is cold — it's freestanding or loosely mounted. A glass door has a continuous gasket and latches closed against the firebox face for true sealing.
Why choose glass screen over mesh screen?
Glass shows the fire more clearly than mesh — there's no woven texture between you and the flames. The trade-off: glass costs more (typically $1,200-$2,800 vs. $500-$1,200 for mesh) and weighs more, so the screen needs sturdier base feet.
Is the glass tempered?
Yes — every glass panel is tempered to ANSI Z97.1 safety standards. Tempered glass shatters into rounded pebble fragments rather than sharp shards if it ever breaks. The panels withstand routine fireplace heat without thermal shock when used as a screen (not sealed door).
Can glass screens crack from heat?
Tempered glass handles up to 470°F. As a freestanding screen, the panel sits 12+ inches from the flames, well below that threshold. Direct flame impingement on the glass (rare) could exceed it — keep the screen at safe distance.
How heavy are glass screens?
Typically 50-90 lbs depending on size. The base feet are weighted to prevent tipping; some models include floor anchors for extra stability. Two-person handling is recommended during install — glass + frame is awkward for one person.
Do glass screens come in custom sizes?
Yes — custom glass screens build in 4-5 weeks. The glass panel is fabricated per order and the frame welded around it. Replacement panels are available if the original glass ever breaks; specify exact dimensions when ordering.
