Spark Guard Screens — Traditional, Affordable Protection

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a "spark guard"?

The most common type of fireplace screen — a freestanding mesh screen designed primarily to contain sparks and embers during an open-fire burn. Typically tri-fold or four-fold, traditional decorative frames, priced $300-$700. The workhorse of fireplace screens.

Is a spark guard the same as a fireplace screen?

Spark guard is a category of fireplace screen — specifically the affordable, traditional, mesh-based type. All spark guards are screens; not all screens are spark guards (decorative, glass, contemporary, and combo styles are screens but go by other names).

Why are spark guards cheaper than other screens?

Mass-produced frames in standard sizes, basic powder-coat finishes, and simpler mesh cuts. The fabrication is high-volume — a single tooling line builds thousands of identical frames per year. Decorative and custom screens are made in lower batches with more handwork.

Are spark guards safe for everyday use?

Yes — that's their primary purpose. The mesh is rated to contain typical wood-fire sparks and embers (small glowing fragments thrown by popping logs). Test data: sparks up to 1/4 inch diameter at 800°F are contained reliably.

What sizes do spark guards come in?

Standard sizes 30×26 through 48×32 cover most masonry openings. Width is more critical than height — make sure the screen extends 2-4 inches past the opening on each side for full coverage. Tri-fold designs adjust to slightly varied widths.

Can I get a spark guard in a finish other than black?

Yes — antique brass, pewter, oil-rubbed bronze, and matte black are the four standard finishes. Custom finishes (plated brass, copper) are available on premium lines but not on basic spark guards. Stick to the standard four for fastest ship and best price.
