The VB36 shipped in several versions, and the suffix on your rating plate tells you which: I for insulated, L for the louvered circulating face, LI for both. That difference matters for a door, because nothing you install may block a circulating model's louvers. The short, complicated life of Vantage Hearth

Vantage Hearth was one of several labels — alongside Comfort Glow, Comfort Flame, DESA, FMI, and Vanguard — applied to fireplaces from DESA International, which filed for bankruptcy in December 2008. FMI Products, LLC picked up the hearth business in 2009 and continued the Bungalow line, then merged with Lennox Hearth Products in September 2012 to become Innovative Hearth Products. Today IHP builds under Superior, Astria, IronStrike, and Comfort Flame; Vantage Hearth was not carried forward. Component support for old Vantage Hearth appliances continued for a while, but the fireplace itself — and any styled factory front for it — belongs to a closed chapter.

Why you can't just buy "a 36-inch door"

• Nominal size is not opening size. "36" describes the firebox class, not the rectangle you need to cover. Two VB36 installations can measure differently after framing, facing material, and twenty years of heat cycling.
• Hardware-store universal doors assume masonry. They anchor into brick and overlap the face — on a sheet-metal prefab there is no safe place for those anchors, and the overlap can smother the louvers.
• The remaining factory option is minimal. A basic black bi-fold (BDB36) still turns up at parts distributors, but the brushed-brass and platinum versions are long gone, and none of them were ever more than a thin builder-grade aluminum frame.

Five mistakes VB36 owners make

We see the same handful of errors on this model, so here they are in prose rather than a checklist. First, burning wood behind closed doors: prefab bi-folds carry tempered glass, which is not rated for that — doors stay open while the fire burns, closed only once it's out, to stop conditioned air escaping up the flue. Second, drilling the firebox to mount a door; the VB36 is a listed appliance with insulation in its shell, and penetrations void that listing. Third, buying an overlap-style masonry door because it looked substantial in the store — see above. Fourth, ordering any door purely from the model number without measuring; the model gets you to the right family, the tape measure gets you to the right door. Fifth, trimming or covering louvers to "clean up the look" on a circulating unit — that airflow is part of how the appliance was designed to run.

Measuring the VB36

Openings vary by installation, so we build from your numbers, not a chart. Measure width in three places and height in three places, keep the smallest of each, and note anything unusual — tile lipping over the edge, a bowed face, a hearth that steps up.
