The VB42 was the big one — the 42-inch firebox in the Bungalow family, sold under the Vantage Hearth badge for great rooms and larger living spaces where a 36-inch front would have looked lost. The series was pitched on its "big box" look with an oversized brick-to-brick opening, which is exactly why replacing its doors is unforgiving: there is more glass span, more frame, and more visible gap if anything is even slightly off. The brand is gone, the series has been superseded, and the only factory-style door left is the most basic version ever offered. VB42, B42, or something else?
Check the rating plate just inside the opening — on this series it usually hides along a side wall behind the mesh screen or near the louver banks. The 42-inch Bungalow family includes B42, B42I, B42L, B42LI, their VB-prefixed Vantage Hearth twins, and the later Comfort Flame B42LI-M; the factory listed a single bi-fold door across all of them, which tells you how closely related they are. Where the brand went
Vantage Hearth was a label on DESA International fireboxes, together with Comfort Glow, Comfort Flame, DESA, FMI, and Vanguard. DESA went bankrupt in December 2008; FMI Products carried the line from 2009; and the September 2012 merger that created Innovative Hearth Products ended the Vantage Hearth name for good — IHP's current brands don't include it, and distributors list newer WRT/WCT 42-inch models as the Bungalow's replacements. Your appliance outlived its maker, which is common for quality fireboxes and no reason to replace one that's structurally sound. It is, however, the reason "call the manufacturer" is no longer useful advice.
Doors for a 42-inch firebox are a different job
At this width, panel weight and alignment start to matter in a way they don't on smaller units. The surviving factory option — the black BDB42 bi-fold, an extruded-aluminum frame on a track suspension, still sold through parts distributors while stock lasts — was engineered to a price for tract builders; the brass and platinum versions were dropped years ago. A custom door for a VB42 means heavier-gauge construction sized to your actual opening, hinges and handles chosen for the panel size, finishes that match the room rather than whatever was on the shelf, and an inside-fit mount: the frame sits within the opening and attaches without a single hole drilled into the firebox shell. Measuring a VB42 opening
Openings vary by installation, and on a 42-inch face even a quarter inch shows. Take width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening and height at the left, center, and right; record the smallest of each set. Frequently asked questions
Does anyone still make original VB42 doors?
Only the plain black BDB42 remains in parts channels, and only while inventory lasts; the brushed-brass and platinum versions are discontinued. There is no styled factory door anymore.
Will a door for the B42 or B42LI-M fit my VB42?
They're the same firebox family and shared one factory door — but we build to your measured opening regardless of badge, because installations differ more than model names do.
Can the doors be closed while the fire burns?
Not on tempered glass. Burn with them open; close them when the fire is done to stop heated room air disappearing up the chimney.
Where is the model number?
