Aluminum Fireplace Doors — Lightweight & Corrosion-Proof

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose aluminum over steel?

Aluminum is the right call for prefab fireplaces with weight-rated factory mounts, for outdoor or coastal installs (salt air doesn't corrode aluminum), and for openings where the homeowner wants the lightest possible swinging door. For masonry custom builds we still recommend steel.

Does aluminum warp from heat?

Aluminum warps faster than steel — its melting point is 1,221°F vs. 2,500°F for steel. We use heavier aluminum gauges (3/16" frames, 1/4" reinforcement) on our aluminum line to push the warping threshold higher. For wood-burning fireplaces with sustained 800°F+ fires, steel still outlasts aluminum.

Are aluminum doors corrosion-resistant?

Yes — aluminum oxidizes a thin protective layer on contact with air and stops there. Unlike steel, it doesn't rust through. That makes aluminum doors the standard choice for ocean-coast homes, screened porches, and outdoor kitchen fireplaces.

How does the price compare to steel?

Aluminum doors typically run 10-20% less than equivalent steel models because the raw material is cheaper. Our Cabot aluminum line starts at $1,150 vs. $1,295 for the steel equivalent. The configurator prices each option as you build.

Can aluminum doors take a powder-coat finish?

Yes — aluminum accepts powder coat just like steel. The full 21-finish range is available. Plated finishes (polished brass, chrome) are not — those require a steel substrate for the plating to adhere properly.

How long do aluminum doors take to ship?

Cabot aluminum doors ship in 14-21 business days as a custom build. We don't stock pre-built aluminum doors because the lower volume doesn't justify the inventory carrying cost. Quick-ship inventory is steel-only.
