Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between ceramic glass and tempered glass?

Ceramic glass (often called Robax or Schott) handles continuous temperatures up to 1,470°F. Tempered glass tops out at 470°F before failing. For wood-burning stoves, inserts, and high-output fireplaces, ceramic is required by code. For decorative doors over open masonry fireplaces, tempered usually suffices.

Is ceramic glass more expensive?

Yes — about 3-4× the cost of tempered glass per square foot. A standard 36×26 ceramic-glass door runs $1,800-$2,800; the tempered equivalent runs $1,200-$1,800. The premium reflects raw material cost and tighter manufacturing tolerances.

Will ceramic glass break from thermal shock?

Far less likely than tempered. Ceramic glass has near-zero thermal expansion — pouring cold water on a 700°F panel won't crack it. Tempered glass under the same shock would shatter. That's why ceramic is the only option for closed-stove burns.

Does ceramic glass cloud over time?

Mineral haze can develop from gas-log byproducts or wood-burn condensates. Wipe weekly with a damp cloth and a small amount of fireplace glass cleaner. Avoid abrasives — ceramic resists thermal stress but micro-scratches reduce optical clarity. With basic care, the panel stays clear for 10-15+ years.

Can I retrofit ceramic glass into an existing tempered-glass door?

Yes if the frame uses a standard glass channel. Measure the panel pocket precisely (height × width × thickness) and order replacement ceramic cut-to-size. We fabricate replacement panels in 2-3 weeks. Ship the old panel in for an exact-match if specs are unclear.

Are ceramic glass doors heavier?

Slightly — ceramic glass is 5-10% denser than tempered. A 36×26 ceramic door runs 50-65 lbs vs. 45-60 lbs for the tempered equivalent. The hardware spec doesn't change; standard masonry or prefab anchors handle the additional weight.
