Propane Fire Pits — Portable, No Hookup Required
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the propane tank go?
Most propane fire pits store a 20-lb tank inside the base or in a hidden compartment. The tank connects via a regulator and quick-disconnect line. Refills are widely available at hardware stores, gas stations, and tank exchange programs.
How long does a tank last?
A standard 20-lb propane tank runs a 50,000 BTU pit for about 10-12 hours of operation. Lower BTU pits stretch to 18-22 hours per tank. Heavy-use households typically refill monthly during use season.
Are propane pits as warm as natural gas?
Per BTU, identical heat output. Most propane pits run 40,000-65,000 BTU, slightly less than the largest gas-line versions (90,000+ BTU). For typical patio use, the difference is rarely noticeable.
Can I use a propane pit indoors?
No — propane fire pits are outdoor-only. Indoor use creates serious carbon monoxide and oxygen depletion risks regardless of pit size. Only ventless gas log appliances with ODS sensors are designed for indoor operation, and even those have code restrictions.
How portable are propane pits?
Reasonably — most pits weigh 60-130 lbs and have casters or handles. The propane tank adds 20 lbs filled. Two-person handling for moves over rough terrain. Compact "tabletop" propane pits weigh 10-20 lbs and travel easily.
What's the cost difference vs. natural gas?
Propane fuel cost: $3-4 per gallon (a 20-lb tank holds ~4.7 gallons, $14-19 per refill). Natural gas: $1.20/therm equivalent ($0.30 per gallon-equivalent). Heavy users save with NG; occasional users prefer propane portability.
