The Comfort Flame B42LI-M is the 42-inch louvered, insulated member of the Bungalow series — a factory-built wood-burning firebox with stamped louvers above and below the opening, a firebrick-look refractory liner, and a pull-chain mesh screen that, by now, has usually sagged off its rod or lost half its rings. It burns wood and was approved to take vented or vent-free gas logs, which is why we see B42LI-M fireboxes running everything from nightly fires to decorative logs. One firebox, many names
Sorting out who made your fireplace is half the battle. The Bungalow line traces back to DESA International, whose fireboxes were sold under Comfort Glow, Comfort Flame, DESA, FMI, Vanguard, and Vantage Hearth labels. DESA filed for bankruptcy in December 2008 and is gone. FMI Products, LLC carried the hearth line forward from 2009 — the B42LI-M owner's manual was issued by FMI Products with a March 2011 revision, and the exact same manual exists with a Comfort Glow cover, proof that one firebox shipped under multiple badges. In September 2012, FMI merged with Lennox Hearth Products to form Innovative Hearth Products (IHP). The Comfort Flame name survives at IHP, but the Bungalow series does not: distributors list newer WRT/WCT models as its replacements. In plain terms, your fireplace is an orphaned design, and no one builds a factory front for it beyond the most basic option.
First, confirm it's really a B42LI-M
On prefab fireboxes like this one, the rating plate is typically riveted just inside the opening — look along the side wall behind the mesh screen, or low in the louver area. You are looking for B42LI-M, or one of the close siblings: B42, B42I, B42L, B42LI, or the Vantage Hearth-badged VB42 versions. The factory door, honestly
Unlike many discontinued prefabs, the B42LI-M still has one factory-style door floating around: the BDB42, a black extruded-aluminum bi-fold on a track suspension system, sold through parts distributors and even Amazon, where the listing names the B42LI-M specifically. If all you want is the same thin builder-grade door the house came with, that option exists while remaining stock lasts — though the brushed brass (BDB42B) and platinum (BDB42P) versions are long discontinued. Are original Comfort Flame doors still made for the B42LI-M?
The basic black BDB42 bi-fold is still sold through parts channels while stock lasts; the brass and platinum versions are discontinued. There is no factory source for anything beyond that one style.
My plate says B42L or VB42LI — same door?
They're the same Bungalow 42 family, and the factory listed one door across it. We still build to your measured opening, not the family name, because that's what guarantees fit.
Can I burn with the doors closed?
Not with tempered glass, which is what standard prefab doors carry. Doors open while burning; closed to cut room-air loss up the flue once the fire is out.
Where's the model number on this fireplace?
