Before you order

This is a vent-free model — check your local code first

Vent-free fireplaces are excellent in the right home and not permitted in others. It takes about ten minutes to confirm, and it is much cheaper to do it now than after installation.

What “vent-free” means

This unit burns gas with no chimney or flue, so all combustion products stay in the room. It is built and listed to ANSI Z21.11.2 and carries an oxygen-depletion sensor (ODS) that shuts off the gas if the oxygen level in the room falls.

Model fuel-gas code caps a vent-free heater at 40,000 BTU/h, limits the combined input of all unvented appliances to 20 BTU/h per cubic foot of room volume, and does not allow it to be the sole source of heat for a home. Your room size genuinely matters here.

Where it is restricted

  • California — state law prohibits the sale of unvented heaters designed for use inside a dwelling. Vented decorative gas logs are expressly exempt.
  • Minnesota — unvented room heaters and unvented decorative appliances may not be installed in any dwelling or occupancy. No exceptions in the rule.
  • Wisconsin — permanently installed gas-fired unvented heating appliances may not be installed; unvented space heaters are separately prohibited in one- and two-family dwellings.
  • Massachusetts — allowed only with a permit from the head of the fire department, inspection by the fire department and the gas inspector, a 40,000 BTU cap per room, a CO detector in the room, and never as the primary heat source.
  • Manufactured (HUD-code) homes, anywhere in the US — federal rule requires fuel-burning heating appliances to be vented to the outside.

How to confirm for your address

Your city or county can be stricter than your state, and these rules change. That is why we do not publish a state-by-state map — the decision is made locally, by a person, not nationally. Call in this order:

  1. Local building department. Ask: is a vent-free gas fireplace permitted here, and do I need a permit? They know the adopted code edition and any local amendments.
  2. Fire department or fire marshal. Required in Massachusetts before the unit may be operated, and commonly the deciding authority elsewhere.
  3. Local or state gas / plumbing inspector. This is who signs off on the final inspection.
  4. Your gas utility. Some will not set or upgrade a meter for an unvented appliance.

We cannot give legal advice and we cannot approve an installation — only your local authority can. If you tell us what they say, we will help you match the right unit to it.

Restricted where you live? A direct-vent model gives you the same fire behind sealed glass, vents to the outside, and is accepted in every state.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked

Will gas logs work in my fireplace?

Start with your fireplace’s approval and the burner’s installation manual. Vented sets need a suitable wood-burning fireplace and working chimney; vent-free sets need an approved firebox and must be permitted locally. Send us your fireplace model or a photo if you are unsure.

What size gas log set should I choose?

Measure the firebox’s front width, rear width, depth and opening height. Compare all four measurements with the requirements for your chosen burner and control. A 24-inch set does not mean it fits a 24-inch opening. Add a photo with measurements and our team can help check your selection.

Should I choose natural gas or propane?

Choose the fuel supplied to your fireplace. Natural-gas and propane components are not interchangeable. If you are unsure, have your installer confirm the supply before ordering; any conversion must be specifically approved by the manufacturer.

Which ignition option is right for me?

Match-lit is a manual option for compatible natural-gas sets. A safety-pilot system adds flame supervision; compatible remote systems offer easier control. Available controls depend on the burner and fuel. Choose from the options shown for this set, or ask our team to help compare them.

What is included with my order?

Check Product details and your selected options for the included logs, burner and controls. Contents vary by set and configuration. If you are replacing only part of an existing system, send us its model number so we can check compatibility before you order.

Do I need a professional installer?

Yes. Use a qualified fireplace or gas professional to check the fireplace, venting, gas supply and clearances, then install and test the set using its manufacturer’s instructions. Installation requirements depend on the exact product and local rules.

Can I burn gas logs with the glass doors closed?

For an open-front gas-log installation, keep the glass doors fully open while the burner operates. Follow the instructions for your specific fireplace and burner, including required airflow around the door frame. A sealed direct-vent fireplace is a different appliance.

How much maintenance do gas logs need?

Have a qualified professional inspect the burner, controls and fireplace at least once a year, or more often if the manufacturer requires it. Follow the set’s cleaning and log-placement instructions; do not rearrange the logs or add unapproved material to the burner.
