Majestic BR36 Fireplace Doors — Custom Exact-Fit Replacement
Replacement Glass Doors for the Majestic BR36 Wood-Burning Fireplace
The Majestic BR36 is a 36-inch radiant wood-burning fireplace built by Majestic, a brand of Monessen Hearth Systems. It was one of the most widely installed factory-built (prefab) fireboxes in American homes from the 1990s into the early 2010s, and it shipped from the factory without glass doors — Majestic sold bi-fold glass doors separately as a field-installed accessory in brushed brass, black, polished brass, and pewter finishes. Those original doors are no longer available, which is why so many BR36 owners end up here: the firebox still works fine, but the doors are missing, broken, or were never installed in the first place. We build custom exact-fit replacement doors for the BR36 and its sister models.
Step 1: Confirm You Have a Majestic BR36
Every Majestic factory-built fireplace carries a metal rating plate with the exact model number. Look inside the firebox — typically on a side wall or the floor near the front edge — or just behind the bottom louver grille below the opening. You may need a flashlight; the plate is often darkened by soot but still readable.
The BR36 belongs to a family of closely related Majestic 36-inch units. The BC36 is the heat-circulating version of the same firebox (it adds louvers and an optional fan), and you'll also see the model listed as BR36(i), or grouped with the GBR36 and NVBR36 designations in parts listings. According to Majestic's published specification sheet, the BR36 family has a factory front opening of 36 inches wide by 21 inches high and is UL/ULC design certified.
One important caution: the Majestic BR36 is not the same fireplace as the Superior BR-36. Superior used a nearly identical model number on a completely different firebox with a different frame and door geometry. Doors sized for one will not fit the other, so always confirm the brand name on the rating plate, not just the number.
Why You Can't Buy the Original Doors — and Why Universal Doors Won't Work
Majestic's accessory bi-fold doors for the BR36 were discontinued years ago, and remaining OEM stock has long since dried up. Several large fireplace-door retailers list the BR36 as a model they simply cannot fit. That leaves owners tempted by "universal" fireplace doors — and that's a mistake on a prefab firebox, for three reasons:
- Prefab fireboxes need inside-fit doors. A factory-built fireplace like the BR36 is a sheet-metal appliance, not a masonry cavity. Its doors must sit inside the opening and attach to the firebox's own frame. Universal doors are overlap-style units designed to anchor into brick or stone with masonry fasteners — there's nothing on a BR36 for them to anchor to.
- Overlap doors can block critical airflow. Factory-built fireplaces rely on air openings and louvers around the opening to keep the chassis and surrounding framing cool. A door frame that overlaps the face of the unit can cover those openings, which is both a performance problem and a safety problem.
- Fit tolerances are tight. An inside-fit door has to match the opening closely on all four sides. "Close enough" universal sizing leaves gaps, rattles, or a door that simply won't seat in the frame.
The right answer for a BR36 is a door built specifically for a prefab firebox, sized to your actual opening.
Our Path: Custom Doors Built to the 1/8 Inch
ExceptionalFire builds replacement fireplace doors to order, measured to the eighth of an inch, with inside-fit frames engineered for factory-built fireboxes like the Majestic BR36. Here's how it works:
- Identify your fireplace in about 15 seconds. Snap a photo of your fireplace or its rating plate and let our AI Fireplace Expert match the model and recommend the correct door style.
- Get a price instantly. Browse our prefab fireplace door collection, enter your measurements, choose your finish and glass, and see your exact price on screen — no waiting for a quote.
- Measure with confidence. Although the BR36's published factory opening is 36" x 21", installed units vary — refacing, replacement panels, and settling can all change the effective opening. Our step-by-step measuring guide shows exactly where to place the tape so your doors arrive fitting the first time.
Safety First: How Glass Doors Should Be Used on a BR36
On a wood-burning prefab fireplace like the BR36, glass doors are not meant to be closed while a fire is actively burning. Burn with the doors fully open so the fire gets proper combustion air and heat doesn't concentrate against the glass and frame. Close the doors after the fire has died down to embers to reduce warm room air escaping up the flue overnight, and keep them closed when the fireplace is not in use to cut drafts. Never block the louvers or air openings around the firebox, and always follow the instructions in your owner's manual and local code requirements.
Majestic BR36 Door Questions We Hear Most
Will doors listed for the Majestic GBR36 or NVBR36 fit my BR36?
These designations appear together in Majestic parts listings for the same 36-inch firebox family, and aftermarket door kits are commonly marketed to fit BR36, BC36, GBR36, and NVBR36 together. That said, don't order off a model list alone — measure your actual opening and confirm with a photo through our AI Fireplace Expert. A custom-built door removes the guesswork entirely.
Is the Majestic BR36 the same as the Superior BR-36?
No. They are different fireplaces from different manufacturers that happen to share a model number. Check the brand name on your rating plate before ordering anything.
Can I put a standard masonry fireplace door on my BR36?
No. Masonry doors anchor into brick and overlap the face of the opening. The BR36 is a metal factory-built firebox that requires an inside-fit door attached to its own frame, with its cooling louvers left unobstructed.
My BR36 never had doors. Can I still add them?
Yes. Majestic designed the BR36 to accept field-installed glass doors, so adding a properly built inside-fit door to a doorless unit is exactly what the firebox was engineered for.
