Majestic MR42 Fireplace Doors — Custom Replacement Doors Built to Order
Fireplace Doors for the Majestic MR42
Majestic has been in business since 1894 and put its first factory-built fireplace on the market in the 1930s — so by the time the MR-series 42-inch fireboxes reached suburban living rooms, the company had refined the zero-clearance formula into a true production product. That is exactly why so many MR42s are still standing in homes today while their original doors are not. Warped bi-folds, cracked panes, screens that shed mesh like a molting bird: the doors were the consumable part. Majestic no longer supplies them, and this page explains how to replace yours properly.
MR42, MR42A, MRC42, MRC42A — which do you have?
Four tags, one family. In Majestic's lettering, the C generally marks the circulating version (built for optional blowers) and the trailing A marks a later revision of the same box. For door purposes the differences collapse: aftermarket specialists list all four against a single 42 x 21 1/2 inch opening, and replacement listings even group them with Majestic's MBU42 builder family and the BT842, which share that geometry. Find your exact tag on the metal rating plate on the inside wall of the firebox — and if it has surrendered to soot, upload photos to our AI Fireplace Expert for a free identification before you order anything.
Inside fit vs. overlap fit — the 60-second explanation
Every fireplace door is one of two designs. An overlap door has a flange that lies against the wall around the opening and screws into masonry — the right answer for a brick fireplace, and the wrong one for yours. An inside-fit door sits within the opening itself, flush and trim, attaching at points a prefab firebox can safely accept. The MR42 is a prefabricated unit with sheet-metal walls, so it must take an inside-fit door, and an inside-fit door only works when it matches the opening almost exactly. There is no trim strip to hide a bad guess. That is why we build to your measurements instead of shipping a "close enough" frame.
What we build for the MR42
Open our prefab fireplace door collection, pick the MR42, and configure the door piece by piece: frame profile, powder-coat or plated finish, clear tempered glass, mesh style, handles. Getting the measurements right
Treat 42 x 21 1/2 as a starting point, not a spec. Openings drift from nominal whenever a fireplace has been refaced, tiled, or fitted with a new surround — common on houses old enough to have an MR42. Our measuring guide takes five minutes: width at three heights, height at both sides, record the smallest numbers, photograph the face. If your tag reads MRC42, measure anyway; circulating models share the opening but your individual installation is the final authority.
A few cautions worth reading
Tempered glass is not a firebox window during a full burn — keep the doors open (mesh closed) while flames are up, and close the glass as the fire dies to stop the chimney from drafting your heated air all night. Never drill fresh holes in the firebox walls to mount anything; the steel is thin and the listing assumes it stays intact. And leave every louver above and below the opening unobstructed — those vents cool the cabinet around the firebox, and a door or facing that covers them creates a genuine overheating risk.
Frequently asked questions
Are original Majestic doors for the MR42 still available? No. The MR series is long out of production and OEM doors are discontinued; today the choice is a generic aftermarket bi-fold or a custom-built door.
Will one door fit my MR42A and my neighbor's MRC42? The family shares a 42 x 21 1/2 opening, so yes in principle — but each door should be built to its own fireplace's measured opening.
Can I burn with the glass doors closed? Not with tempered glass. Open glass and closed mesh during the fire; closed glass once it's out.
I can't find any model number — now what? Photograph the fireplace face, the opening, and the inside walls, and send them to our AI expert. Identification is free and takes minutes.
