The bigger trap is grabbing a standard masonry door. The MBUC42 is a prefab: its face is sheet metal with louvers, not brick. An overlap-fit masonry door has nothing structural to clamp against, and on a circulating model specifically, covering the louvers chokes off the airflow that keeps the unit and the wood framing around it at safe temperatures. A prefab firebox needs an inside-fit door that mounts within the opening against the firebox flange — full stop.

Where MBUC42 Door Projects Go Wrong
- Trusting the fit chart instead of the tape measure. The 42 x 21 1/2 figure is nominal. Refractory panels and installation tolerances change the real opening; measure before ordering, every time.
- Burning with tempered-glass doors shut. Tempered glass isn't built for sustained direct flame exposure. Doors stay fully open during the burn and close after the fire is out.
- Covering the circulating louvers. On a "C" model they're not decoration — they carry the convection air that cools the shell. Blocking them can overheat the chase.
- Forcing an overlap-fit masonry door onto the metal face. There's no flat masonry to seal against, and the clamps have nothing sound to bite.
- Screwing into the refractory or firebox liner. A prefab door anchors to the front flange only. The liner is not a mounting surface.
Getting Good Measurements
Pull the screen aside and take the opening width in three places — top, middle, bottom — and keep the smallest. Do the same for height at left, center, and right. Then look just inside the opening for anything that would interfere with an inside-fit frame, such as a raised refractory floor. Decades-old builder boxes are rarely perfectly square, so if your top and bottom widths differ, write down both; we would much rather work from your raw numbers than a rounded average.
