Gas Logs — Vented & Ventless, Real Flames Without the Mess
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between vented and ventless gas logs?
Vented logs require an open chimney/damper during operation — they produce real high flames and significant heat but vent combustion byproducts up the chimney. Ventless (vent-free) logs use a precise gas-air mix with very clean burn — no chimney needed, but limited operating time per code.
Are gas logs cheaper than wood?
Up-front yes — a typical gas log set runs $400-$1,200 vs. years of firewood costs. Operating cost depends on local gas rates: vented logs use 60,000-80,000 BTU/hr; ventless 25,000-40,000. At $1.20/therm, a 4-hour vented burn costs about $3.20.
Can I install gas logs in any fireplace?
Most masonry fireplaces with a working damper accept vented gas logs. Prefab fireplaces require the gas log set rated for that specific make and model — substituting can void the prefab warranty. Ventless logs require a fireplace certified for ventless operation by your local code.
Do I need a professional installer?
Code requires a licensed gas plumber to make the gas connection in most US jurisdictions. The log placement itself can be DIY (carefully follow the manufacturer's burner-bed pattern), but the gas line and flame-safety device must be installed by a pro.
How realistic do gas logs look?
Modern ceramic refractory logs are highly realistic — bark texture, grain detail, and char patterns molded from real wood. The flames in vented logs are large and yellow-orange like a real wood fire. Ventless flames are bluer and shorter due to the cleaner burn requirement.
How long does a gas log set last?
The ceramic logs themselves last 10-15+ years if not handled roughly. The burner and pilot assembly are typically warranted 5 years. Ignition components (thermocouples, valves) can need replacement at 8-12 years. Most components are user-replaceable.

GOOD TO KNOW
Gas Log Questions, Answered
Vented or ventless gas logs — which should I choose?
Choose vented for the tallest, most realistic wood-like flame (damper stays open, chimney required). Choose ventless for heat efficiency — nearly all warmth stays in the room (damper closed, no chimney needed). Full trade-offs: Vented vs Ventless — how to choose. Are ventless gas logs legal in my state?
Most states allow them, but California, Wisconsin and Montana do not, and some cities (like New York City) have their own bans. Vented sets are permitted everywhere. If you’re not sure what your local code says, ask us before ordering — we check this daily.
What size gas log set do I need?
Measure your firebox: front width, back width, depth, and height. As a rule of thumb the set should be roughly 6″ narrower than the front opening, with room at the sides for the valve or remote receiver. Our order form filters sizes that fit your measurements.
Natural gas or propane?
Order the set for the fuel your home already has: natural gas comes from a utility line; propane (LP) comes from a tank. They’re not interchangeable without a conversion — every set on this page lets you pick the correct fuel during configuration.
Which ignition type should I pick?
Match light is the simplest and least expensive (light it with a match). Safety pilot adds a standing pilot with a control knob. Millivolt works with remotes and wall switches. Electronic ignition is the most efficient — no standing pilot. If your fireplace is outdoors, choose an outdoor-rated system.
Can I put gas logs in my existing wood-burning fireplace?
Usually yes — that’s the most common upgrade we ship. You’ll need a gas line to the firebox (a licensed plumber’s job) and, for vented sets, a working chimney with the damper fixed open. From there, installation is straightforward and the mess of wood is gone for good. Full walkthrough with costs: converting a wood fireplace to gas logs.
